How it works
Four decisions, then a composition.
Each one is measured from the audio — tempo grid, bar phase, key, band energy, vocal separation — not typed in by a person.
- 01
Where to leave the first record
Only where a phrase has finished and the band genuinely rests. Never mid-word, never mid-bar. The outgoing singer rides out over the new music until the line ends by itself.
- 02
Where the second record arrives
Not its first sound, and not where the level crosses a threshold — where the record lands. An intro that is loud but carries no bass for fifteen seconds is entered at fifteen seconds, at the drop.
- 03
How long the passage runs
Derived from how alike the two recordings actually sound. Close relatives need a bar or two. Strangers need to be introduced.
- 04
What happens in the gap
Written in the language of what the band does: the drums thin, the bass falls away, a low hum carries the hole, the new groove lands on the downbeat.
Then the composition. A generative audio model receives the real audio on both sides with a hole in the middle and writes only the hole — masked inpainting, so it is conditioned on your actual records rather than prompted blind.
Several candidates are written per join and measured for dead air and level continuity. The empty ones are discarded.
FAQ
Questions
Is this a crossfade with extra steps?
No. A crossfade plays two records at once and lowers one while raising the other. Seam Engine plays neither during the join — it writes new instrumental music for that specific pair, and both records return bit-exact outside the seam.
What does the model actually get to see?
The real audio on both sides, with a hole in the middle. It writes only the hole. That is masked inpainting, and it is why the result is conditioned on your actual records rather than on a text prompt describing them.
How long is a transition?
Derived from how alike the two recordings sound. Close relatives need a bar or two. Strangers need to be introduced, and get sixteen.
Do I need to set the tempo or the key?
No. Tempo grid, bar phase, key, band energy and vocal separation are all measured. The interface exposes judgement, not knobs.
What formats can I bring in?
MP3, AAC, WAV and FLAC, up to 40 MB per record in the current build. Larger stems are on the list.
Who owns the music it writes?
You do, for the passages Seam Engine composes. You are responsible for holding the rights to the records you bring in — the engine does not license source material for you.
When can I use it?
Access is by invitation while the engine is in rehearsal. There is no pricing yet, and we would rather say that than invent a number.
Two records go in. One piece of music comes out.
You will hear the change. You should not hear a join.
